Managing product prices and sale prices
Pricing is the core of your online store. Keeping your rates current ensures your customers have the right information, while sale prices help you move inventory and run promotions during busy shopping seasons.
How to set or change a product price
Follow these steps to update the price of a standard (Simple) product:
- Log in to your WooShop dashboard and go to Products > All Products.
- Hover over the product you want to edit and click Edit.
- Scroll down to the Product Data box (usually located below the main text editor).
- Ensure the General tab is selected on the left.
- In the Regular price ($) field, enter your standard retail price. Do not include currency symbols; just use numbers and a decimal point if needed (e.g., 24.99).
- To lower the price, enter a value in the Sale price ($) field.
- Click Update in the top right Publish box to save your changes.
Scheduling a sale in advance
You don’t have to manually turn a sale on and off at midnight. You can set it to happen automatically.
- Next to the Sale price field, click the Schedule link.
- Two new fields will appear: Sale price dates.
- Select the start date and the end date from the calendars.
- The sale will automatically begin at 12:00 AM on the start date and end at 11:59 PM on the end date based on your site’s timezone settings.
- To cancel a schedule, click Cancel next to the dates.
Managing prices for Variable products
If your product has options like size or color (a Variable product), prices are managed differently:
- In the Product Data box, click the Variations tab.
- Click on an individual variation to expand it.
- Enter the price for that specific option. You can have different prices for a "Small" vs. a "Large" item.
- If you want to set the same price for all variations at once, use the Bulk edit dropdown at the top of the Variations tab and select Set regular prices.
Common scenarios
- Flash Sales: Set a Sale price with a schedule that lasts only 24 hours. Your shop will automatically revert to the Regular price once the time expires.
- Clearance: If you are discontinuing an item, enter a Sale price and leave the schedule blank. This keeps the item on sale indefinitely until you delete it or change the price back.
- Bulk Increases: If your suppliers raise their rates, you can quickly update your Regular price to maintain your margins.
Troubleshooting price issues
The sale price isn’t showing up on the site
Check if you have a schedule set. If today’s date is outside the start or end date, the sale price won’t appear. Also, ensure the Sale price is actually lower than the Regular price; WooCommerce will not display a sale if the price is higher or equal to the original.
I changed the price but the old price is still there
This is usually caused by browser or site caching. Refresh your page or clear your cache from the top toolbar to see the updated numbers.
Prices are missing the currency symbol
Currency symbols are controlled globally, not on individual products. If you don’t see your currency, go to WooCommerce > Settings > General to set your currency and position.
Recap
- Regular Price: Your everyday price.
- Sale Price: The discounted price shown with a "Sale" badge.
- Schedules: Use these to automate your promotions.
