How to add a simple product in WooCommerce

A simple product is the backbone of most online shops. It represents a single item that doesn’t have variations—like a one-size tote bag, a specific book, or a bag of coffee beans. Since there are no choices for the customer to make (like picking a size or color), the buying process is quick and direct.

How to add your first product

Follow these steps to get your item live on your WooShop site:

  1. Open the editor: Log in to your dashboard and go to Products > Add New.
  2. Name and describe your item: Enter the product name at the top. In the large text area below, write a detailed description. This is where you explain the benefits, materials, or dimensions.
  3. Select the product type: Look for the Product data box below the editor. Ensure the dropdown is set to Simple product.
  4. Set the price: In the General tab, enter your "Regular price." If you want to run a discount, enter a "Sale price."
  5. Manage stock: Click the Inventory tab. Here you can enter a SKU (a unique ID) and check the "Manage stock" box to enter the quantity you have on hand.
  6. Write a short description: Scroll down to the Product short description box. This text usually appears right next to your product image, so keep it brief and punchy.
  7. Add visuals: On the right sidebar, find the Product image section. Upload your primary photo here. Use the Product gallery section below it to add secondary angles or lifestyle shots.
  8. Organize with categories: On the right side, check the box for the relevant Product category. This helps customers find the item when browsing your shop.
  9. Go live: Review your details and click the blue Publish button at the top right.

Examples of simple products

  • A physical book: One title, one price, no variations.
  • A branded mug: A single design that doesn’t come in other sizes.
  • Digital downloads: A PDF guide or an e-book (just check the Virtual and Downloadable boxes in the Product data section).
  • A service: A "One-hour consultation" sold at a fixed rate.

Troubleshooting common issues

The "Add to Cart" button isn’t showing up
WooCommerce will hide the buy button if the price field is empty. Even if the item is free, you must enter "0" in the Regular price field for the button to appear.

The image looks blurry
Since WooShop uses the Kadence theme, your images are displayed with high clarity. If they look blurry, ensure your original upload is at least 800×800 pixels. Avoid using tiny images and letting the browser "stretch" them.

The product is "Out of Stock" immediately
If you checked "Manage stock" but left the quantity at 0, the site will prevent customers from buying. Check the Inventory tab to ensure your stock levels are correct or uncheck "Manage stock" if you have unlimited supply.
